Gardoš Tower

The tower went up in 1896 for Hungary's thousand-year anniversary — on what was then the empire's border, running straight through what is now Belgrade.

It stands on the hill above old Zemun, on the remains of a medieval fortress. You climb to it through narrow streets of low houses, and from the top you get the Danube, Great War Island and the whole Belgrade skyline across the water.

Why it's worth it

It is the best view of Belgrade that is not taken from inside Belgrade — you see the city from outside, the way it was watched from across a border for centuries.

Below the tower on the river side there is the old Zemun cemetery and a few benches almost nobody uses — same view, no ticket, no queue on the stairs.
